So Plast!c Vessels
April 2023 A series of sculptural vessels hand-woven from used plastic grocery bags. So Plast!c changes the perception of disposables by turning them into precious objects. “The average use lifespan of a plastic bag is all of about 12 minutes. Then that bag essentially exists forever: it can take 500 to 1,000 years to break down.” – Tim Donnelly, The Outline So Plast!c vessels are created using a craft-driven approach. Used plastic bags are collected, cleaned, and converted into balls of ‘plarn’, or plastic yarn, which are then crocheted in geometrical patterns to form the vessels. The outcome is a sheer, almost fragile frame that is frozen in its state. Each vessel is unique. They might carry marks of colour from commercial branding that was printed on them, and are often composed from bags from more than one store. Raw, organic movements of plarn contrasts against the regular, grid-like patterns in a tension between transience and permanence. Material: Used plastic grocery bags Prices available upon request.
